Albums

An Album is a private collection of photo and video content on your profile that you can share with folks of your choice on Grindr. An Album can contain up to 10 photos, and one video.

Once you share an Album with someone, they'll be able to see all of its content. Albums are designed to add an extra layer of control and privacy over your content - so you can unshare with anyone, at any time. 

We're currently testing different aspects of Albums, so you may see variation in the functionality listed here. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to our team here.

How to add photos to an album

To add photos to an Album:

  • Tap on your profile photo in the upper-left hand corner of your grid.
  • Tap My Albums.
  • Select an album to edit by clicking the “+” icon.
  • Select a photo from your device OR:
  • Upload a photo that you’ve previously sent to via chats. These are called “Grindr Uploads,” and they’re the same photos as in your My Media section.

Once you’ve added new photos to your Album, everyone you’ve shared it with will see a gold ring around your avatar when previewing your Album. This ring indicates that you’ve added new photos, and will remain for them until they view your Album again (or, until you remove their access).

To delete a photo from your Album, tap the trashcan icon on that photo. To delete a photo while previewing your own Album, click on the three-dot icon on the right-hand side, and then tap “Remove from Album.”

To reorder the photos in your Album, long press and drag any photo to a new location.

To navigate through an Album, you can tap on the left or right side to go back or forward, respectively.

How to add video content to an Album

There is a limit of 1 video per Album, and videos must be under 15 seconds and less than 30MB. If a video is longer than 15 seconds, the first 15 seconds of the video will be selected. 

To add video content to an Album:

  • Tap on your profile photo in the upper-left hand corner of your grid.
  • Tap My Albums.
  • Select an album to edit by clicking the “+” icon.
  • Select a video from your device
  • Optional: Use the editing tools provided to modify your video.

You can remove the audio from a video on iOS while editing the video. On Android, you can remove the audio once editing is complete. Note: By default, videos are muted when played back.

To reorder the videos in your Album, long press and drag any video to a new location.

To navigate through an Album, you can tap on the left or right side to go back or forward, respectively. Videos will play automatically, muted, with the video player buttons hidden.

How to delete an Album

You can delete an Album by selecting the “...” edit menu on the Album you want to delete and then selecting “Delete Album." Confirm you want to delete the album to complete the deletion process. This cannot be undone. Deleted albums are unshared with all users and all content is purged according to our Data Retention Policy.

How to share an Album

All Albums are shared through chats – so, to share your Album with someone, you’ll first need to start a chat with them from their profile. Next, click on the camera icon to access your My Media section. Tapping on the “My Albums” icon here will prompt you to share your Album with the person you’re chatting.

Once you share your Album, it will appear as a message in your chat history available to both you and the recipient. They’ll be able to view your Album directly from your conversation, as well as from your profile, and the Albums tab in their inbox. Sharing your Album will also send them a push notification if they have notifications enabled on their account.

New photos added to your Album will be viewable by anyone you’re actively sharing your Album with. All Album recipients will see a gold ring on the Album thumbnail when an Album has new content that they have not yet seen (see more above).

Currently, you can share your Album with up to 5,000 people. There is no limit on how many Albums you can receive from other people. Premium subscribers can access all of the Albums they’ve ever received, but if you're using a free account, you'll only have access to the most recent Albums you've received.

You can see who you’re sharing your Album with by navigating to the My Albums page, and tapping on “Shared with.” You can also see if you’re sharing an Album with a specific person by opening your chat conversation with them, and clicking on the camera icon. The My Albums icon will say “sharing” if they currently have access to your Album.

Though you can share your Album with anyone at any time, you should always ask for consent first. We've designed Albums with consent in mind, by blurring Album previews and ensuring Albums must be accepted by the recipient. Still, unsolicited Album sharing may cause others to report your profile, and could ultimately lead to your account being banned.

XTRA and Unlimited subscribers can share and unshare up to 5 albums at a time from chat.

Expiring Albums

If you’re a Grindr XTRA or Unlimited subscriber, you can send other users Albums that automatically expire after a certain amount of time. When sharing your Album, you’ll be prompted to set an expiration time for your Album access, from the following options: 

  • View indefinitely (access to your shared Album will never automatically expire)
  • View once
  • View for 10 minutes 
  • View for 1 hour 
  • View for 24 hours

The expiration timer will begin once you share the Album, regardless of when it’s first viewed by the recipient. You’ll both be able to view the remaining Album access time directly in the chat where you’ve shared your Album. As with all Albums, you can unshare expiring Albums at any time, even before the timer has expired. 

Albums are set to “View indefinitely” as a default. Once you’ve shared an expiring Album, you won’t be able to change or extend when it expires – but you can always unshare and reshare your Albums with your intended expiration time. You can also always reshare an Album once it’s expired.

How to unshare an Album

There are a few ways to unshare your Album with other people. After navigating to the My Albums page, tap on “Shared with” to see a list of everyone who currently has access to your Album. To rescind Album access, select each profile you wish to remove, and then tap Stop Sharing. 

You can also unshare your Album from within a chat conversation. Head to your Media – if you’re currently sharing your Album with them, you’ll see this indicated here. Tap on My Albums, and then select Stop Sharing. 

Once you stop sharing your Album with someone, they will immediately lose access to your Album and all of its content. They will not receive a notification that you’ve unshared with them, and the preview of your Album in the chat conversation history will be locked and no longer clickable.

Note that deleting the Album message from your chat conversation history will not unshare the Album itself (for Unlimited accounts, the same is true of unsending a message). The Album will remain shared, and the other person will still be able to access your Album from their chat conversation history. 

If you block someone, they will no longer see your profile – including your Album or any of its contents. Unblocking this profile in the future will not automatically reshare your Album with them.

Albums shared with you

Currently, you can share your Album with up to 5,000 people, and there is no limit on how many Albums you can receive from other people.

However, if you’re a free Grindr user, you’ll only be able to view the 5 most recent Albums you've received - any older Albums will be unavailable (indicated by a locked icon).To view an older Album that's been shared with you, you'll first need to remove a more recently-shared Album, or ask someone to unshare theirs with you.

You can view all that Albums that have been shared with you by heading to your messages inbox, and tapping on the Albums tab. Here, you’ll also find a link to preview your own Album.

If you no longer want someone’s Album to be shared with you, go to your Albums tab and long press on the Album you no longer wish to receive. On iOS you can click “Remove Album” to remove one at a time. On Android you can select multiple Albums, and tap on the Trash icon, and then confirm “Remove Album(s)“. You can also block their profile or ask them directly to unshare their Album with you.

If someone has shared multiple Albums with you, you can view those in a few different ways:

  • In your Inbox, under the Albums tab, you’ll see (1 of X) displayed on an album to indicate how many Albums they’ve shared.
  • In your chat history, you’ll see all shared Albums via the Albums icon in the upper right corner.
  • On their profile.

Keep in mind, free Grindr users can only view the 5 most recent Albums, so some of the Albums may be locked.

Album replies and reactions

Once an Album has been shared with you, you’ll be able to reply or react to specific Album content.

When viewing an Album photo, you’ll see a text field appear at the bottom of your screen. Each response you type into this field will be delivered as a new message to the Album owner in your chats with them (responding to multiple photos, or the same photo multiple times, will send multiple messages).

Next to this text field, you’ll also see a flame icon at the bottom of each Album image. Reacting to an Album photo by tapping this flame icon will also notify the Album owner that you’ve liked that particular photo. Keep in mind that reacting to an individual Album photo is different than sending a Tap.

Album features by subscription level

If you’re using the free version of Grindr, you can:

  • Create and share one album.
  • Access the 5 most recent Albums shared with you (older Albums will be locked). To view an older Album, you can remove a more recently shared Album, or ask someone to unshare an Album.
  • Watch a video once (Note: a video counts as watched if 50%+ of the video has been played).

If you have a Grindr XTRA or Unlimited subscription, you can: 

  • Create and share up to 10 Albums. 
  • Access all Albums shared with you.
  • Search for profiles with Albums by using the “Albums Only” filter.
  • Watch a video an unlimited amount of times.
  • Send expiring Albums.
  • View all updates in your Fresh update carousel.

If you’ve canceled your XTRA or Unlimited subscription, you can only update and share your most recent Album. You can still preview your additional Albums as well as delete content, delete an Album, and unshare.

How to report an Album 

As with all images sent directly via chat, Album content must abide by our Community Guidelines to help keep Grindr a safe and healthy space for everyone (when reviewing these guidelines, keep in mind that Album content is classified not as “in the grid,” but as “everywhere else”). Generally, the same content is allowed in Albums that is allowed in images sent privately in chat. 

We do not allow the following in Albums:

  • Images of minors, even if they’re in the background or blurred
  • Violence, weapons, offensive or illegal content
  • Images of drugs (including implied drug use & drug paraphernalia)
  • Spam, advertising, offers to buy or sell goods or services, or copyright photos that aren’t yours

If you see an Album that goes against our Community Guidelines, please report the profile. In your report description, let us know that your report involves Album images and our moderation team will review. 

Album screenshot safety

We work to make it as difficult as possible for anyone to capture content on Grindr. That said, it’s important to keep in mind that bad actors may find creative ways to screenshot private content (such as using an additional device to take a photo of a device displaying private content, or via third-party recording tools installed on their device). We ask that you please remain aware of this possibility when sharing private content on Grindr.

Data 

The content in your Album will be retained as long as your account is active. For detailed information on how long we retain data, please see our Data Retention Policy.
