Grindr is introducing a one-time age verification process for all users in the UK starting in July 2025. This change supports new legal requirements and helps ensure Grindr remains a safe, adult-only (18+) space — while continuing to protect user privacy and data.
Who needs to verify their age?
- Starting July 2025, anyone using Grindr in the UK — whether signing up or returning to the app — will be required to confirm they are 18 years or older.
How does the process work?
You’ll be asked to verify your age using one of the following options:
- A quick video selfie, or
- A video selfie paired with a photo ID
You’ll be able to choose the method that works best for you. If your initial verification attempt doesn’t go through, try again in a well-lit space and make sure your camera is clean and stable. In some cases, if verification still isn’t successful, you may be offered an alternative option directly in the app. Your ID may be reviewed by a trained human moderator as part of the process — this helps ensure fairness and accuracy if automated checks are inconclusive.
This is a one-time process per account.
Why is Grindr introducing this?
- This update is part of the UK’s Online Safety Act, which requires platforms like Grindr to take steps to prevent minors from accessing services intended for adults.
- You can read more about the law here.
What if I don’t complete verification?
- If you’re using the app in the UK and don’t complete age verification, you will not be able to access Grindr.
Is my data safe?
Yes. Grindr takes privacy seriously. Here’s what you can expect:
- All data is fully encrypted
- Information is not shared with third parties
- Your verification data is permanently deleted once the process is complete
Grindr uses FaceTec, a trusted provider of age assurance technology, to help complete the verification process. While FaceTec facilitates the selfie check, all data processing is managed directly by Grindr.
