Grindr is introducing a one-time age assurance step for people using the app in Australia.
Starting in December, Grindr users in Australia will be asked to confirm that they are 18 or over. Grindr has always been a platform for adults, and this update reflects that longstanding requirement.
How the Process Works
We’ve designed Grindr’s age assurance flow to be clear, flexible, and privacy-first. No action is needed until December 2nd when users will be prompted in the app to assure their age. Here’s what to expect:
- Choose how you verify. To confirm they are 18 or older, those using Grindr Australia can complete a quick video selfie or pair a video selfie with an official photo ID.
- One-time, account-bound flow. The process only needs to be completed once per Grindr account. Anyone signing up will be prompted during registration, and those already on Grindr—or opening the app while in Australia—will be asked to complete it as well.
- In partnership with FaceTec. Grindr utilizes biometric verification technology from Facetec, while independently managing all data processing to ensure your privacy is protected and access is restricted to adults.
Accepted Photo IDs
If you opt or are prompted to use the method that matches an official photo ID with a video selfie, the following official photo IDs are accepted:
- ID Card: ImmiCard, Work Permit, Proof of Age, Photo Card
- Driver’s License: Learner, Heavy Vehicle, Probationary, Type 2, Restricted
- Passport
How Your Privacy Stays Intact
Any documents or videos you provide are used only for the age assurance process. They are encrypted during verification and permanently deleted once the check is complete. Grindr does not retain images, documents, or videos submitted for verification. We only store which method you chose and whether you passed or failed the check.
What About Outside Australia?
If you’re outside Australia, you won’t see this verification flow unless you open Grindr while visiting Australia. In that case, the process will apply just the same.
