Map view lets you browse nearby profiles as avatars on a map, alongside the traditional Grid view. It’s available on app version 26.18 or later in select launch cities.
What is Map view and how does it work?
Map view is a new way to browse on Grindr. Instead of a grid, you see nearby profiles as avatars on a map. Map view sits alongside Grid view without replacing it, and the two views share the same filters and search results. To open Map view, tap the Map tab in the top navigation or swipe left from the grid. The map opens centered on your location.
Who can use Map view?
Map view is available on app version 26.18 or later in select cities. The feature is in testing, so availability may vary.
What happens if I search outside the available cities?
Map view is only available in select cities. If you pan or search outside these areas, the map stops showing profiles and a banner says the area is outside the launch area. Tapping “View profiles” or the search result opens an info sheet explaining that Map view isn’t available there yet.
Why can I see Map view when my friends in other cities can’t?
Map view is in a limited test in a few cities and will expand to more cities soon. You don’t need to do anything. If you’re in a launch city but can’t see Map view, update to app version 26.18 or later and restart the app.
How is Map view different from Right Now?
Map view is a standalone browsing feature that shows all nearby active profiles. Right Now is a layer within Map view that shows only active Right Now sessions.
How does my subscription affect what I see in Map view?
In Map view, your subscription determines the browse distance rings (circles) on the map and which profiles you can open:
- Free: You see two rings. Profiles inside the Free ring open normally. Profiles between the Free and Xtra rings show an Xtra upgrade prompt. Profiles beyond the Xtra ring show an Unlimited upgrade prompt. Filters narrow your results, so fewer profiles may appear inside the Free ring, just like in Grid view.
- Xtra: You see one ring. All profiles inside the ring are unlocked. Tapping a profile beyond the ring shows an Unlimited upgrade prompt.
- Unlimited and Edge: You see no rings. All profiles are unlocked, and no banners or upgrade prompts appear.
What happens when I tap a profile in the Xtra ring as a Free user?
Profiles between the Free ring and the Xtra ring are available with Xtra. Tapping one of these profiles shows an Xtra upgrade prompt.
Why aren’t the rings centered or equal in size?
Ring sizes change based on how many profiles are nearby and which filters you’re using. Rings are smaller in busy areas and larger in quiet areas. They’re also slightly offset from your pin because profile locations are randomized for privacy.
How do location privacy and the location randomizer work?
In Map view, you’re never shown at your exact GPS location. Your pin is placed at a random point inside a circle around you. You can adjust how much your location is randomized with a slider that ranges from “Less” to “More.”
What happens if I turn off Show Me on Map as a Free or Xtra user?
For Free and Xtra users, visibility works both ways. If you turn off “Show Me on Map,” other profiles on the map appear blurred to you (“You have to be seen to see”). Tapping a blurred profile shows a “Show Me?” prompt to turn your visibility back on.
What happens if I turn off Show Me on Map as an Unlimited or Edge user?
Unlimited and Edge users can hide themselves from the map and still see other profiles without blur.
Why is “Show Me on Map” greyed out?
If you’re an Unlimited user and can’t toggle “Show Me on Map,” you may be in Incognito mode. Incognito users are hidden from the map. Turn off Incognito to change your map visibility settings.
How do I manage NSFW settings for Right Now content?
NSFW Right Now photos are blurred on the map by default. To see them, turn on “Nudity in Right Now content” in Map Settings, or tap a blurred photo to start the opt-in flow.
What is the onboarding process for existing users in launch cities?
If you’re an existing user in a launch city, you’ll complete a two-step setup:
- An “Introducing Map” screen, which you clear by tapping the main button. If you skip it, it reappears when you restart the app.
- “Set your visibility” in Map Settings, where you confirm your visibility and randomization settings. Afterward, a temporary tooltip appears on your pin, and a red dot appears on the Map tab until you tap it.
How do filters, search, and recenter work?
Map view and Grid view share the same filters and search. The Favorites and Events filters are hidden in Map view and turn back on automatically when you return to Grid view.
Recenter moves the map back to your location, or to the location you searched. If the map is already centered, tapping Recenter switches the zoom between showing about 25 and about 99 profiles. Tapping “X” in search resets the map to your GPS location.
How do profile clusters work in busy areas?
When many profiles are close together, they group into a cluster bubble that shows one photo and “+N.” Tap the cluster to zoom in and see the individual profiles. Your own profile is never included in a cluster.
How do Boost, Roam, and Mini Map work in Map view?
- Boost: You can buy a Boost directly from Map view. It uses your current or searched location by default.
- Roam: After you search another location, Map view prompts you to Roam. Roam stays on that location until you turn it off.
- Mini Map: Full profiles include a link that opens a mini map showing that person’s randomized location relative to you.
How do I report crashes or other issues in Map view?
You can report Map view bugs, including crashes on Android, and share other feedback with us by contacting Grindr through our AI Chat Bot. See also: Chatting with the Grindr AI assistant.
