Grindr is an 18+ service. We remove accounts that belong to anyone under 18 and use additional tools to help prevent underage use and create a safer space for everyone.
One of these tools is a one-time Age Assurance check, powered by FaceTec. This process uses facial age estimation to determine whether a user appears to be 18 or older.
How Age Assurance Works
You may be asked to complete an Age Assurance check in the following situations:
Legal Requirements
Certain jurisdictions require platforms to complete age assurance checks before allowing access to adult-only services.
Suspected Underage Use
Your account may be flagged by user reports or platform safety systems if there are signals suggesting underage use.
What Happens During the Check
The Age Assurance process includes the following steps:
Liveness Check
You’ll be asked to take a short video selfie to confirm you are a real, live person (not a photo or recording).
Age Estimation
FaceTec analyzes the video to estimate whether you appear to be 18 or older.
Outcome
If the system determines you appear over 18, you can continue using Grindr.
If the system cannot confirm you appear over 18, your account may be restricted or removed.
If the liveness check fails, documentation verification may be used to confirm your age.
If You Believe You Were Incorrectly Flagged
Age estimation technology may occasionally produce incorrect results.
If you believe your account was wrongly identified as belonging to a minor, you can request a review by selecting Appeal on your ban screen.
If you experience technical issues, you may also confirm your age by submitting a valid government-issued ID. This secondary option is entirely optional and should only be used if in-app processes fail.
Data and Privacy
We take privacy seriously. During the FaceTec Age Assurance check:
We do not use facial recognition, biometric matching, or identity verification.
Biometric data is not used for advertising, personalization, or profiling.
FaceTec does not retain your image or video after the check is completed.
Grindr does not store, reuse, or repurpose the selfie or video.
Age Assurance data is used only to determine whether you appear to be 18 or older.
The separate Confirm Your Age ID process follows strict data-minimization and deletion practices. For more details, refer to our Privacy Policy.
Where Age Assurance Applies
United Kingdom
Under the UK Online Safety Act, users accessing Grindr in the UK must complete a one-time Age Assurance check. This applies to both UK residents and travelers.
Australia
Under the Online Safety Amendment (Social Media Minimum Age) Act 2024, Grindr will introduce Age Assurance in Australia beginning December 2025 for residents and travelers.
Grindr has always been a platform for adults, and Age Assurance reinforces this long-standing requirement.
