We want to be clear about how we use your personal information for artificial intelligence (“AI”), which includes generative AI and machine learning. We may refer to our AI-powered features and our use of AI as “gAI™” (pronounced “gay-eye”).This article explains how Grindr uses your information to:

Important: We do not use HIV status, Last Tested Date, Testing Reminders, Health Practices, Poz and Sober Tags and Tribes, and vaccination status for AI training or AI-powered features.

Developing & Training AI Technology
Grindr may use your personal information, including special-category data and limited data, to develop and train AI technology to enable a more personalized Grindr experience.
Special-category data
What is special-category data? Privacy laws call some kinds of information “special category” or “sensitive.” This includes things like your gender, position, chat content, and precise location.
Your choice: You can choose whether or not to let Grindr use this type of data to train its AI technology. You’ll see this option when you create your account, and you can change it any time in your Privacy Settings (under “AI Technology Training: Special Category Data” in “AI Technology Controls”).
If you opt in: Grindr will rely on your consent to use your special-category data to help train AI technology and improve personalization, such as recommendations.
Limited data
What is limited data? This includes things like your age, taps, display name, and profile photos.
Your choice: Grindr may use this type of data to train its AI technology by default, but you can opt out at any time in your Privacy Settings (under “Enable gAI™ Features” in “AI Technology Controls”).
If you don’t opt out: Grindr will rely on this data to help train AI technology and improve personalization, such as recommendations.
AI for Personalization & Connection
Beyond developing and training AI technology, Grindr may use your personal information, including special-category data and limited data, to enable AI-powered features that personalize the user experience and help build better connections.
Your choice: By default, Grindr may use personal information to power AI features. You can opt out anytime in your Privacy Settings (under “Enable gAI™ Features” in “AI Technology Controls”).
If you don’t opt out: Grindr may use your information to provide personalized features, such as recommendations, reconnection reminders, summaries of previous interactions with other users, chat suggestions, and profile insights. Some of these features may be available only or primarily to premium subscribers, but other users may also benefit through enhanced opportunities for discovery and interaction across the app.
Safeguarding the Grindr Platform
Grindr may use your personal information, including special-category data and limited data, to safeguard the platform by using AI technology.
Why we do this: We combine AI technology with human moderators to help prevent and respond to illegal, malicious, and other unauthorized activity. For example, we:
- Flag profiles and content that may violate our Community Guidelines or Terms of Service
- Detect and block fraud, scams, and other harmful behavior
- Check profile photos to make sure they follow our rules
- Review text, media, and messages for harmful or illegal content
Your choice: You cannot opt out of these protections, since they are essential to keeping Grindr safe and usable for everyone. However, if your profile or content is blocked or banned as a result of these tools, you always have the right to request a human review through our appeal process.

- Machine learning - The capability of a device to perform functions that are normally associated with human intelligence such as reasoning, learning, and self-improvement.3
- Special-category (sensitive) data - In some jurisdictions and under some regulations, information that may reveal an individual's racial or ethnic origin, details on their health or sex life/sexual orientation, or precise geolocation, among other data, may be considered "special category" data or “sensitive” data.4
- Limited data - Non-special category data or non-sensitive data that is personal information you have the option to provide, personal Information we receive from your device when you use the Grindr properties, and personal information we receive from third parties.5
