Poppers (alkyl nitrates) are liquid chemicals that are sometimes used during sex. They’re sold in small bottles and turn into gas when opened. Inhaling them can make you feel euphoric, warmer, and relax your anal muscles, making it easier to have anal sex. Using them at the same time as erectile dysfunction drugs, ecstasy or meth can be dangerous, and result in a sudden drop in blood pressure and affect your heart. They can often also have milder side-effects, like headaches or dizziness. Heavy use of poppers can increase the risk of cancers caused by viruses, such as human papilloma virus (HPV). If you’re going to use them, try inhaling only small amounts at first. More information about poppers can be found here.
