At-home testing allows people to test for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) at home. It offers control, comfort, and convenience.
Why At-Home HIV Testing Matters
Many people delay testing because of time, privacy concerns, cost, or stigma. Home testing can remove some of those barriers by making testing easier to access, especially for people who may not feel comfortable visiting a clinic or who live far from testing services.
Through partnerships with trusted local organizations, Grindr embeds links in the app that allow users in selected countries to order free or low-cost at-home HIV test kits. These orders are processed by partner organizations, not Grindr. Grindr does not store personal health information related to test kit orders and does not share user data with partners.
What HIV Home Testing Looks Like
Most HIV self-tests are designed to be simple and easy to use. While steps can vary by test, the process often looks like this:
- You order a test kit online or through the Grindr app (where available)
- The kit is mailed discreetly to your home
- You follow the instructions included in the kit
-
Depending on the test, you either:
- swab your gums (oral fluid test), or
- prick your finger to collect a small drop of blood
Some tests give rapid results at home, while others require mailing your sample to a lab. Instructions usually explain what your result means and what steps to consider next, including confirmatory testing or care if needed.
At-Home STI Testing
In addition to HIV self-testing, some at-home kits also allow testing for other STIs, such as chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, or hepatitis B and C. These kits may include urine samples, swabs, or finger-prick blood tests that you collect yourself and send to a lab.
Some infections still require clinic-based testing or treatment, so follow-up care may be needed depending on results.

A Few Things to Keep in Mind
- Home testing is one option—clinic testing is another. You can choose what works best for you.
- A positive self-test result usually needs follow-up testing with a healthcare provider.
- Testing recommendations, availability, and follow-up care vary by country and region.
