DoxyPEP is a medication designed to help reduce risk of STIs even for those having
sex without condoms. DoxyPEP is antibiotic doxycycline taken after oral, anal, and
vaginal/front hole sex.
The difference between DoxyPEP and STI treatment is that DoxyPEP is taken before
any symptoms and before testing positive for an STI.
In current studies, DoxyPEP was over 65% effective at reducing the risk of chlamydia,
gonorrhea, and syphilis. DoxyPEP can be used regardless of HIV status, but it may be
slightly less effective at preventing these STIs for those already living with HIV.
Studies show that Doxycycline is safe if taken as prescribed by your doctor for those
that are having frequent sex. Remember, the current guidance for DoxyPEP is to take
the medication after sex, not used before sex like PrEP for HIV. We don’t yet know if
taking doxycycline daily or before sex has any added benefit for preventing STIs like we
do for HIV PrEP.
Since these studies are new, you may want to share the latest about DoxyPEP with your
health care professional, including this report from the CDC.
