The answer to this question is complicated. For some people, it may not be safe to come out to a medical provider, especially in countries where being LGBT is illegal or privacy between doctor and patient aren’t guaranteed by law.
However, if we are able to trust our medical providers, they will be able to take care of us better. Talking to them about your gender identity, sexual orientation, and the kinds of sex you’re having will allow them to do the exact tests you need to keep you healthy.
Remember that you deserve an experience at the doctor’s office that’s not just safe but also free of shame. If a doctor tries to tell you that your sexual orientation, gender identity, or the sex you’re having is wrong, politely tell them you’d like to talk only about medicine during your visit.
