The Gender Filter is free for everyone and allows you to search (and be found) by gender identity. Simply select the gender(s) of people you’d like to see on your Grid, and start chatting! Make sure you’ve filled out your gender identity on your profile, too, so you’re findable to all the right folks.
Note: We're currently testing this feature, so it may not be available to you just yet.
Setting your gender
How to edit your gender
Go to Edit Profile, and under the Identity section, select up to three genders that best describe your identity.
Gender identity options
We have a list of 50+ gender identities to choose from - and even provide non-gendered pronoun options for languages that don't have gendered pronouns. To ensure that culturally-specific gender identity terms were included in that list, we partnered with experts across 20 languages. You can browse that full selection here.
We’re still learning every day – and always open to expanding that list. If you have a gender identity or pronoun suggestion for us, please submit it using the Suggest a Gender link on the gender selection screen.
Filtering by gender
From your Grid, open up Filters and select Gender. From there, select the gender identities of folks you’d like to see on your Grid. If you tap the “More Genders” dropdown, a search bar will appear that you can use to search for a specific gender. Once you’ve made your selection(s), tap Apply to save your preferences. To clear your filters and reset your Grid, just click the Reset button to start the selection process over.
Grouping genders
The goal of the Gender Filter is to make it easier to find who you’re into and be found by who’s into you! This includes folks of all gender identities. Lots of gender identities fall into broader groups, so we’ve built that into the filter’s functionality. Our three umbrella gender groups are Men, Women, and Non-Binary. For instance, selecting Non-Binary will show you results for folks of all genders that fall under the non-binary umbrella (ie. agender, androgynous, bigender, genderfluid, crossdresser, queer, pangender, transfeminine and transmasculine). The same goes for Men and Women. Our team has worked diligently alongside trans experts to ensure that we accurately classify each identity under all additional identities that apply.
If you select a specific gender from More Genders while one of the umbrella groups (Men, Women or Non-Binary) is selected, that umbrella group will be deselected, and allow you to filter by the new specific gender you’ve chosen.
FAQs
Q: Why can’t I filter for Cis Men or Cis Women?
A: When designing gender settings on Grindr, it was important to us to not further perpetuate discrimination and harm for the trans and nonbinary community. For this reason, we allow filtering based on gender - you can specify that you want to see men or women - but this will include all men or all women, because trans men are men and trans women are women. You can also filter for trans and nonbinary people, as we know it’s critical for this community to be able to find each other easily.
Q: Why did my gender on my profile change from Cis Man/Woman to Man/Woman?
A: We’ve removed Cis Man and Cis Woman as available gender identities. If you had Cis Man/Cis Woman on your profile, it will now say Man/Woman. This is part of our ongoing commitment to inclusivity and an effort to reduce discrimination toward trans and nonbinary folks.
Q: Where did the Trans tribe and FTM and MTF tags go?
A: The Trans tribe and FTM and MTF tags have been absorbed into the Gender Filter for a more streamlined experience. The Gender Filter makes it super easy to find who you’re into (and be found by who’s into you!), as well as connect with your community.
